(Hair) Mask Monday – @verb Purple Toning + Hydrating Hair Mask

June 15, 2020

It has been far too long since I’ve been able to visit my favorite colorist, @paintedbyjames, I have become a little obsessed with products claiming that they can eliminate brassy tones in hair. This time, because I love their products and the marketing for this one in particular sucked me in, I’ll be testing out the @verbproducts Purple Toning + Hydrating Hair Mask ($18 for 6.3 ounces –!

What it claims:

🔘 This nourishing hair mask is formulated with açai and pro-vitamin B5 to hydrate and soften while toning and neutralizing yellow hues

🔘 The violet pigment works to restore shine and brighten color-treated (or natural) blonde, silver, or gray hair that becomes dull or brassy between salon visits

🔘 Free of sulfates SLS and SLES, parabens

🔘 This product is also cruelty-free, and gluten-free, and comes in recyclable packaging

My experience:

🔘 I have used this product on several occasions.

👍🏻 The other toning product I’ve used in my hair and enjoy requires back to back applications of the product in the same washing cycle, so, even though it’s a few cents less per ounce, because you have to use more each time, I would consider this option a better value.

👍🏻 I find this makes my hair incredibly smooth and shiny.

👍🏻👎🏻 Each time I use it, I notice a slight difference in the tone of my hair. It says to keep it on for 5 to 7 minutes, but I’ve also been told that leaving it on longer may result in more of the look I’m shooting for. Hopefully that doesn’t damage my hair because I’ll be trying that method next time around.

My verdict?

I have been pleased with my experience thus far. While it doesn’t tone as much as the promotional photos show, there’s a chance I think my hair is brassier than it actually is and my expectations are unattainable without professional assistance. However, the hydration it provides me is some of the best I’ve been able to achieve. So, I look forward to continuing to use this and will have my final thoughts in an upcoming empties post!
